I have a two week old installation of Windows Server 2016 Essentials. I am all of a sudden receiving a 500 - Internal Server Error when I try to download the connector from the server address. I have tried using the server name as well as the IP address of the server. Also just to troubleshoot, I went to one of the computers I previously installed the connector on and found it in the downloads folder so I could skip that step on this new computer. I was able to start the installation, however when the installation program attempts to connect to the server it says, "Cannot get information from server. Please contact your server administrator."

Thread Refresh: Please wait for the group policy client on Win SBS Server 2008
This has been a question asked in the past, but mine is a tad different. Please forgive the somewhat duplicate question...
I'm (sadly) using Windows SBS 2008 with the following roles assigned to it:
DC, DNS Server, DHCP Server, Exchange 2007.
- Connected via RDP.
- Applied Windows security updates as usual.
- Manually stopped all Exchange-related services to speed up the rebooting process.
- Sent command to restart Windows (Start Restart).
- RDP screen turned blue, and then stayed that way forever. I thought it was just a disconnected session from shutting down.
- Local terminal (physically connected to server) showed this screen and has stayed that way for the last 32 hours:
- After waiting initially for about 30 minutes, I reconnected via RDP, and it slowly came back up. It took about an hour. I don't know if it was because of me connecting via...
Issue with SBS 2008 after updates
Hello,
We have an SBS 2008 server running as a hyper-v virtual machine hosted on server 2012 r2. We haven't had any problems recently until we applied the latest Windows updates on Friday evening.
It's been fine until this morning when users started to use the systems, then the mapped network drives dropped connection, and general systems hosted by the vm stopped working. When we tried to log on, we couldn't, and was stuck at the login screen. Turned vm off/on, services were fine until we attempted to login, it got stuck at "Applying registry policy" and then all the services stopped working again.
During the problems we could still ping the vm despite nothing else working, so we don't think the machine crashed. We think something may be killing performance when logged in because we restarted again and haven't attempted to log in and it...
Licensing Compliance Service caused a shutdown
I am running Windows server 2016 essentials as a host machine and Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a VM. From my understanding, Essentials requires to have only one domain. I have AD installed/configured on both units. There is only one Domain but the VM keeps shutting down because of license compliance issues. What am I missing?
Migrate from 2008 SBS w/ Exchange to Office 365 and Server 2016 Essenstials
I have a client running SBS 2008 w/ Exchange 2007 on-prem. We've decided to move them to Office 365 and additionally install Server 2016 Essentials and subsequently remove the 2008 SBS server. I've found several guides explaining the process of migrating from SBS 2008 to Essentials 2016, some of which are more helpful than others but most do not mention the Exchange bit. My question is, should we migrate them to Office 365 first, then perform the 2016 Essentials migration, or the other way around? I'm assuming if we migrate to 2016 Essentials first, and then demote the SBS server, this will cause Exchange to break. Any suggestions?
SBS 2011 Virtualization
Hi Guys,
I've been tasked with virtualizing an old server on SBS 2011 using Hyper-V on a Server 2012 build.
I should start by saying that my experience with Hyper-V is little to none and this is my first time doing this.
I have done a backup of the SBS 2011 server to an external drive. I've added this as a physical drive on the IDE Controller. I did try this on the SCSI Controller, however Windows was unable to see the drive once I booted to the SBS 2011 disk on the VM.
With the backup drive being on the IDE controller. I'm able to boot to the SBS 2011 disk, go through "repair your computer" and select the image on the external drive. I'm then able to go through the rest of the steps fine.
Once it starts to restore from the image on the external drive, it shortly fails. The error message varies as I have tried to go through this a...
SBS 2011 to 2016 Standard - Redirected Folders and User Shares
I have already setup the 2016 Server as the Primary AD DS, DNS, DHCP, and AD FS.
I need to migrate/move the Redirected Folders to the new server so I can take sbs 2011 out of production.
What is the best most clean way to move the files?
Should I move the files to a File Server and not to the DC?
A friend told me about Forsenit's product but that is moving the files from each computer to a new domain. I plan to setup/rename my domain once I have migrated from sbs. But with being a single sysadmin, I needed very little network downtime and the quickest way to migrate to server 2016.

Unable to Remove Archived Computer Backups - WSE2012R2
We are using WSE2012R2 and have a number of old computers with archived backups that need to be removed. When I use the dashboard to attempt this, I get the following error:
"Cannot Remove {NAMEOFPC}. Cannot complete the task because the server is busy. Please try again later."
I have tried for days, rebooted, stopped backups. I'm out of ideas. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Renaming local AD domain
Hi All,
I need to rename my local AD domain. I am trying to setup AD Connect and ADFS on my server 2016 DC but I have .local in my domain name. I have added companyname.com as a UPN suffix to use Azure AD Connect, will that work for ADFS also? I'm thinking it would be easier to just rename my domain. This article seems easy enough.

Need SBS 2000 CD3
Hello,
Can anyone provide me with a ISO image for Small Business Server 2000 CD 3 (the Exchange uninstaller)?
I have to migrate a server for a friend that believe it or not is still humming along with SBS 2000. In order to update the AD schema I would like to get Exchange out of the way. They do not use Exchange at all - email hosted somewhere else.
Thanks in advance.
DirectAccess WSE2012R2 WinRM Error
I am trying to setup direct access on my WSE2012R2 server which already has anywhere access configured. When I run the wizard, I run into the following error:
"The WinRM client sent a request to an HTTP server and got a response saying the requested HTTP URL was not available. This is usually returned by a HTTP server that does not support the WS-Management protocol.
"
Has anyone seen this before?

SBS 2008 VM sometimes locks up during backup snapshot
Hi all,
I am starting a new topic for this as a continuation of: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2021085-issue-with-sbs-2008-after-updates. Dan was the original creator of that topic but is currently away and the investigation has moved on since then.
Below is an edited re-post of a topic I started on technet - https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b4abb476-a1f3-416e-b553-77d6f482e35f/sbs-2008-vm-s...
In the last few weeks our SBS 2008 VM has locked up 5 times during the early backup phase, which is sometime around when it is doing the snapshot before beginning to write the backup file. It had been fine until recently.
It has only locked up during this early phase of the backup. On a good backup what you would normally see are events like the below, but the server freezes just before these would normally happen:

Server 2016 Server Essentials - Fails
I have tried and tried to setup Server Essentials with a NEW domain name using the wizard and it fails every time.
I have NOT used admin or administrator as the admin account name.
I have set the IP as static (Its getting its info from another DC - not of the same domain - I am creating new domain)
It just fails - I dont see anything in event viewer, and I dont know where else to look.
Any thoughts?
2012 R2 Essentials shutting itself down every Wednesday morning
This one is driving me crazy. It started a couple of months ago. This is on a 2012 R2 Essentials system. The office workers show up on Wednesday morning and the server is powered off. I manage the system remotely. I often work late Tuesday to do patches and updates, and always check to be sure the system is back up after the reboot. I have even logged in a few hours later to make sure it is still up, and at times a couple of hours before the crew arrives. When they show up the power is off! A review of the logs is not any help as it just has no entries for about an hour before they turn it on again. This week the last entry was 05:53:57, and it got turned on at 06:48:16. If it were random days of the week it may be a different question, but only Wednesdays just before 6 am. No scheduled events, I checked there. I am the only admin, so...
Stumped on permissions issue SBS 2008 this should be easy!
Simple enough, I've done this a thousand times and don't recall an issue like this.
User is getting Windows cannot access \\server\DOCS, you do not have permission to access \\server\DOCS
Let's say we have 2 users, Bob and Doug. Doug is new and needs access to a share that Bob has, so I create a shared folder, lets call it DOCS.
Using the SBS console, created a security group called DOCWORKERS and added both of them to the group. Went to explorer and added DOCWORKERS to the folder with the normal permissions that I use for all other groups. Same error.
Double and triple check permissions, log out/in etc. Same error. Using the effective permissions tool for that folder, check to see if he has permissions, he does. Change security group to Full Permissions, check again, same error, effective permissions says he has full permissions access.

Server Essentials 2016 Shared Folders through dashboard
Morning!
Bought new server with essentials which I am now starting to regret, but hey, it's here so lets do this right?
BTW we are a relatively small (computer) user Mfg. Plant, so that's why we have essentials.
Adding shared folders through the essentials dashboard, and when I get to the permissions section there are no groups to add (choose access level).
I was able to do this before, and this is on network and local storage locations. I'm finding minimal info out there for Essentials 2016 so any kind of pointer in the right direction would be great. This Essentials server is the DC. DNS in network adapter set to local host address. Any other info you need please let me know!
SBS backup and Restore
I am trying to build a redundant server using the SBS backup and restore utility. I have carried out a bare metal backup from one server and would like to restore to an identical server (not on the same network) it is also an identical server. I have tried a few times and get a few errors, Now during the post i can see my hard drives and also I have installed SBS 2011 previously and it installs and runs fine. But soon as I go back to do I restore same error in pic.
Also i am following this guide:https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/sbs/2010/06/11/how-to-perform-a-bare-metal-restore-on-small-busi...

How to convert Server 2016 Essentials Retail to Server 2016 Standard Retail
Hi,
I am trying to figure out the Product Number/Price/Method for converting a Retail version of Server 2016 Essentials to a Retail version of Server 2016 Standard. I currently haveG3S-00936 (Server 2016 Essentials Retail Box) installed.
I understand this is just the purchase of a conversion key with a command, but I am having difficulty getting the right key/product from a Microsoft Partner. Perhaps I am asking the wrong thing?
The conversion is mentioned here (about half way down):https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/installation-and-upgrade

Users computer loading incorrect files from old domain profile
About a year ago we had a mandate to change user profiles to always have first initial last name. Most users already had this but a few had other login names. We created both on our domain environment (Windows Server 2012) Most users this has worked out fine but one laptop periodically loads the files from the old profile and it appears to the user that they lost a years worth of files. These files are in a desktop folder and backed up on the domain under shares userProfiles$ IN that folder the old and new profile exist. My question is how to I keep it from loading the old profiles files rather than the new ones.
